Henri Edmond Cross (1856–1910) was a French painter and one of the pioneers of Neo-Impressionism. Originally working in a more traditional style, he later adopted pointillism, influenced by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. Cross’s mature work, like The Promenade, showcases his shift toward a more expressive use of colour and looser, freer brushwork compared to earlier, more rigid pointillist techniques. A key figure in the transition from Impressionism to early modern art, Cross infused his landscapes with idealism and a deep reverence for the natural world.
