Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) was an American painter, poet, and essayist, known for his bold use of colour, symbolism, and emotional depth. Often associated with early American modernism, Hartley’s work blended European influences like German Expressionism and Cubism with a distinctly personal and American voice.
Throughout his life, Hartley traveled extensively across Europe and the U.S. where his drawing inspiration come from landscapes, spiritual themes, and personal experiences. His paintings range from vibrant abstract compositions, such as his celebrated German Officer series to powerful, rugged depictions of the American Northeast, especially Maine, where he was born and where he returned later in life.
Hartley's art is marked by a deep sense of longing, identity, and connection to place, making him a central figure in shaping American modern art in the early 20th century.
