Equivalent

Alfred Stieglitz (1864–1946) was a pivotal figure in American art, often called the "father of modern photography." He dedicated his life to establishing photography as a legitimate fine art.

Starting with Pictorialism, where he created painterly, atmospheric images (like Winter, Fifth Avenue), he later championed "straight photography", emphasizing sharp focus and objective reality. His abstract "Equivalents" (cloud studies) are considered early examples of abstract photography. He also famously created a vast portrait series of his wife, painter Georgia O'Keeffe.

Beyond his own photography, Stieglitz was an influential impresario. He founded the Photo-Secession movement, published the influential journal Camera Work, and opened the groundbreaking gallery "291" in New York. Through these ventures, he not only promoted photography but also introduced European modern art (Picasso, Matisse) and emerging American modernists to the United States, profoundly shaping the course of American art.
