Claude Monet: The Father of Impressionism
Claude Monet (1840โ1926) was a French painter and one of the most important figures in the history of art. As a founder of the Impressionist movement, Monet helped to completely transform the way artists saw and represented the world. Instead of focusing on realistic detail, he sought to capture the fleeting effects of light, atmosphere, and moments in time, rather than static scenes.
His painting Impression, Sunrise (1872) gave the movement its name, and although the term โImpressionismโ was originally used as an insult by critics, it quickly became one of the most influential movements in Western art. Monetโs bold brushstrokes, use of vibrant colours, and interest in everyday subjects helped pave the way for modern art.
Monet painted outdoors, or en plein air, which was a relatively new practice at the time. He often returned to the same scene many times to observe how light and weather changed its appearance. His famous series of Haystacks, Rouen Cathedral, and Water Lilies showed the power of perception and variation in art.
Monetโs work broke from tradition and challenged the strict rules of academic painting, inspiring generations of artists after him. Without Monet and the Impressionists, later movements like Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, and even Abstract art might never have emerged. His approach helped artists to focus on individual expression and experimentation-core values in modern art.
Today, Claude Monet is remembered not only for his beautiful paintings but also for changing the course of art history. His vision encouraged artists to see with fresh eyes and to paint what they felt, not just what they saw.
