Properties of Human Heart by Augustus Waller 1888
Plate from Augustus D. Waller’s Introductory Address on the Electromotive Properties of the Human Heart.
Augustus Desiré Waller (18 July 1856 – 11 March 1922) was a British physiologist renowned for his pioneering work in electrocardiography. In 1887, he recorded the first human electrocardiogram using a capillary electrometer. He went on to develop the first practical ECG machine with surface electrodes and presented his work across Europe and America—often using his dog, Jimmy, in live demonstrations. The Bull by Franz Marc (1912)
The Bull by Franz Marc is a bold black-and-white woodcut that captures the raw power and energy of a bull in motion. Using dynamic lines and abstract forms, Marc conveys the animal’s strength and spiritual vitality. A key figure in the Expressionist Der Blaue Reiter group, Marc often used animals to symbolise purity and deeper emotional truths. This piece reflects his intense connection to nature and his innovative, modernist style.Abstract Shapes by Hannes Maria Flach (1928–1936)
This is a striking example of early abstract photography, merging art and science through the manipulation of light and form. Created in the interwar years, this photogram—made without a camera—explores geometric abstraction using beams of light and translucent circular shapes to evoke movement and depth. Influenced by Constructivism and the Bauhaus, Flach’s work reflects a fascination with modernity, perception, and the experimental potential of photography.
