Franz Marc (1880–1916) was a German painter and one of the leading figures of the Expressionist movement. He co-founded Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group in 1911 alongside Wassily Kandinsky, aiming to explore spiritual truths through art. Marc is best known for his vibrant depictions of animals, which he saw as pure and spiritually superior to humans. He used bold, symbolic colours such as blue for masculinity and spirituality, yellow for femininity and joy, and red for violence and conflict.
